Calm productivity for academics

Write descriptive email subject lines1 min read

Write descriptive email subject lines, including enough information so that the reader can tell at a glance why the email is relevant for them. This will also make your emails more easily searchable.

Here are some examples to start your subject line with clear guidance about what’s required:

  • SIGN: Requires a signature
  • DECISION: Requires a decision
  • REQUEST: Asking for permission or approval
  • ACTION: A requirement for the recipient to take action
  • INFO: For information only; no response or action required

Scholar: Making sense of our complex world.

My upcoming book teaches systematic thinking for navigating complex decisions in the workplace, family choices, and community issues—no academic training required.
