Update (12/12/2024): Since posting this, I’ve rebooted the Head space Twitter account, and also added Bluesky and Mastodon. But with a twist. I no longer post to social media directly. Instead, I focus my writing on this website, which gets automatically shared to social media.
I want to spend more time writing good content, instead of managing a social media presence.
You may have noticed that I haven’t posted anything on the Head space Twitter account for a while. Since deleting my personal Twitter account I’ve been spending less time on social media, and it’s been an enormous relief. That’s probably a personal issue, as I have a tendency to feel like I need to keep up with All The Things.
I found that I used social media to fill the gaps between periods of work but that it offered little respite. The things we tend to do when we’re on a break are not always the things that are restful.
Life goes on
Quitting social media also made me realise that life and work keep going. This may seem obvious, but the feeling that I’d be missing out on so much meant that it took months for me to feel comfortable with the decision. Now that I’ve deleted it, I have more time and less anxiety around missing out on potentially interesting content.
Once I realised that nothing bad happened when I stopped using Twitter, I started resenting the time I was spending on the Head space account. It took me longer to curate content for Twitter than it took to prepare this newsletter. Which bothered me because writing on Twitter often feels like shouting into the void and getting nothing back, while the newsletter feels like a more personal connection, and is less performative.
Newsletter focus
Allowing me into your inbox is a vote of confidence that I wasn’t getting on Twitter. Moving forward, I want to spend more time making sure the newsletter is as good as it can be.
